Designing Kids’ Rooms in 2021

Kid’s room in a modern style with striped blue-white walls and a parquet with a carpet on the floor. There is a white bed with pillows, lockers and shelves with toys and books, table.

Cozy fabrics, warm, earthy tones, vintage pieces, and private spaces lead the overall design trends for fall 2021. But, it is important to pause on private spaces and think of our children. What is important when creating a children’s room in 2021?  One thing we have learned over the past few years is that we all need our own space to work, play, relax, and rest.  Designing the right space can be tricky. With greater school demands and more social interests and activities taking place at home your child’s room has become their retreat.  Creating this space for our children needs to capture all these elements and should be a fun project that is accomplished by working together when possible.

The first rule… keep it simple!  When it comes to kids’ rooms, less is usually more.  By keeping the décor simple and furnishings to a minimum, you will create a space that can be easily updated as your child grows.

Be creative and make the most of space.  Whether you are working with a small room or a big room making the most of your child’s space is an absolute necessity.  A simple loft bed doubles space by allowing the use of the floor space below.  This space can be converted to a play area,  study/reading nook, or lounge area depending on age.

No matter what the age kids have a lot of stuff.  Hooks, wall-hugging book rails, under-the-bed storage crates, and furniture with built-in storage are great options.  Don’t forget to install the second rail in the closet an easy way to expand storage potential.

Incorporate color, pattern, and texture.  Sometimes adding a rainbow of color will last more years than one solid color.  If you are wondering what makes the kids/ rooms on Pinterest so good look again it is usually the careful use of pattern and texture.  Partnering the color pallet with the use of pattern and texture is a professional decorator’s secret weapon and can take a room from blah to breathtaking with just a few added elements.

Decorate for the child.  What are their interests in sports, dance, science, technology, dolls, trucks, and cars, the list goes on and on?  No matter what the budget a child’s room can be personalized.  While creating a cozy and comfortable space is essential don’t forget good lighting and a warm personalized atmosphere are a necessity!
